Much of what organizations have done to increase employee productivity through training in the past few years have failed to deliver results and return their investment. That is, if they were measured at all. It’s no longer acceptable to “hope” an employee gets trained. And raising the entertainment value or using canned or generic classes are not the answers either. Many of these classes fail to deliver the content in a method that is specific to a company’s people, products and services, markets, competition, and specific business requirements.
To have effective training today, developers must assess the needs of those being trained; custom craft content to fit the student, business and objectives; and measure, test and report on what impact the course is making on the student. According to the Learning Resources Network:
77 percent of organizations use reaction measures;
only 36 percent use learning evaluations;
15 percent measure behavior change; and
only 8 percent measure results.
Training programs also need to incorporate blended delivery mechanisms such as on-site, in-person classroom training, live-Web delivered, recorded-Web delivered and computer-based training. The Web-based and computer-based delivery fit the need of the “just-in-time” requirements where students need to gain access to segments of training content on the fly during the course of the day. Instructor-led training is required for complex knowledge transfer and testing student working knowledge of the subject matter.
